1921 in Vincennes she was the daughter of Ira and Cora (Crawford) Ready She was a homemaker and a member of Emison United Methodist Church Glenn served as pianist and organist at the church for 62 years She was also active in various groups in the church including the WSCS Surviving are her husband Marten Schultz sons Larry Schultz and his wife Kaye of Bicknell David Schultz and his wife Carolyn of Indianapolis and Bruce Schultz and his partner Jared Bruce of Tulsa Oklahoma five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren "'T i iMWP'ir'' if Her parents and a sister Irene preceded her education BYKIRKJOHANNESEN COLUMBUS REPUBLIC Mike Pence said he is seeking a second term as governor because his administration has unfinished business such as making greater strides in education One focus area will be advancing and expand ing a five county prekin dergarten pilot program that gets underway this year Pence said during an interview with The Repub editorial board Among other educa tion issues Pence said a replacement for troubled ISTEP test is being discussed with its new vendor He also said more career and technical education opportunities can help control the costs of a college education Pence said his experi ence with the Busy Bees Academy in Columbus helped him understand the importance of prekin dergdrten and identify needed in a quality pre program always believe and still believe that the best pre is a prosperous fam ily that can provide the enrichment at home that every child Pence said After visiting Busy Bees and similar quality pre programs Pence said he started to see that many children are not getting such educational enrich ment at home and that the prekindergarten pro grams consist of far more than day care are programs that are designed inten tionally to make up for what enrichment kids are not getting in the Pence said have a real Children who benefit most from prekindergar ten are those who come from lower income fami lies Pence said Neighboring Jackson County was among the five counties picked last year for the pilot program which officially begin until fall but had a soft launch in January The recently approved biennial state budget which increases 12 fund ing by about $460 million fully funds the pilot with $10 million The governor said early results have been encour aging sold on the value of quality pre for disad vantaged he said Pence said securing the first public funding for public pre in Indiana his tory means a lot to him but he wants to build on the program want to learn from it and find out ways in a fiscally responsible con text that we might be able to expand opportunities to more vulnerable he said Another look at ISTEP The state Department of Education is working on a replacement for Indi ISTEP test which came under fire this spring for being too long for students Eventually Pence issued an executive order for it to be short ened expectation is that complete that work this he said Besides being against more time spent tak ing ISTEP tests Pence want college stu dents to face an increas ing burden of debt to pay for their education Some colleges such as Purdue University Indiana University and Ivy Tech Community College have frozen tuition for some or all students in an effort to keep it afford able But another way state is trying to keep col lege costs for students under control is requiring schools to map out degrees tor students providing a clear picture of the class es required and the costs involved Pence said The Commission on Higher Education is work ing on creating incentives for colleges to help stu dents finish their degrees' on time or sooner the governor said Yet another way to keep students from rack ing up college debt is to ensure that they have alternate pathways to a job Pence said Some students attend college for a few semes ters and quit after discov ering it the right path generating debt in the process Pence said Had those students had alternate pathways to a job such debt might have been minimized he said The governor said career and technical edu cation in high school can help students secure the skills needed to land a job The fall will be the last first day of school at Otwell Elementa ry The Pike County school will close its doors after the 2015 2016 school year The Pike County School Board voted 4 1 to approve the closing of Otwell one of the school three ele mentary schools in its regular meeting Monday night The school board also approved eliminating seven teaching positions and slicing a principal position by bringing the middle and high schools under one administration (one principal and two assistant principals) Pike County Schools Superintendent Suzanne Blake said the votes were the result of a failed oper ation tax referendum for the schools Pike County voters decisively denied the measure last month The referendum which would have raised prop erty taxes 29 cents for every $100 in assessed value would have provid ed $23 million in annual funding The district has been running on a deficit in recent years and can not continue to operate without cuts School offi cials expect the expenses to outpace its revenues by about $19 million if the district con tinues spending as it has been Officials expect to save the district $700000 by closing Otwell Com bined with the eliminated staff positions Pike Coun ty School Corporation will save roughly $1 million been pulling money from our rainy day and our general funds" Blake said have to find ways to reduce reliance on our rainy day The building would require $2 to $3 million in renovations in the foreseeable future a fac tor that contributed to its closing Otwell has been a highly regarded school In 2011 it was named a' National Blue Ribbon School and in 2014 was named to the list of Indi ana our Star Last school year Otwell had a 96 percent rate on the I READ test which measure competency in phonics vocabulary and reading comprehension The school averaged 15 students per classroom last school year and had about 120 in total 'The board decided to keep Otwell open one more year because members felt closing the school
