PRIVACY ISSUES
The primary purpose of these family trees is to preserve the history
of the families and to enable contact between members. So I include
living members and a method of contact if I can. If for any reason you
would like your contact details excluded please let me know.
ABBREVIATIONS b born, bp (or chr.) baptised, c about, chn children, d died, dr daughter, fr father, m married, sp spouse, FS=www.familysearch.org, Th Thomas, Wm William
DATES Month is after day. So 3.4.1770 is 3rd April not March 4.
NAVIGATING THIS FILE Control-f opens a window lower left where you can enter a keyword like your ancestor’s name or ID from SUMMARY. Next to it are up and down arrows for the next occurrences of the keyword. Choosing kit as a keyword and a few uparrows will take you to the start of the file. Choosing summary will take you to the SUMMARY. Control-end will take you to the end.
1. THE NUMBERING SYSTEMS USED
(i) Each tree starts with a person with generation 0 and ID 0:
0 0-Jo BLOGGS m1 sp-Joan, m2 sp-Harriet. So he had 2 wives, the 1st being Joan.
Their children are generation 1 (as in 1-Richard BLOGGS) and numbered in order:
1 1-Richard BLOGGS
2 1-Denise BLOGGS
3 1-Fred BLOGGS
The children of say Denise are generation 2 (as in 2-John SMITH), & numbered
21,22, ...
2 1-Denise BLOGGS m sp-Dun SMITH
21 2-John SMITH
22 2-Marge SMITH
23 2-Fred SMITH
So each time someone has children, they are inserted after their previous sib
(or after their parents if they have no older sib),
& before their younger sibs.
(ii) To make this descendancy chart look like a conventional family tree,
you need to put all the pages of the tree together as one vertical sheet,
then turn it on its side with the left margin at the top. Now draw horizontal
lines between all siblings. The top line will join all the 1-, that is 1,..,5.
The next line will join all the 2- but be broken so as not to cover any 1-.
So it is in 2 parts: the first part joins 21, 22, 23 and the second joins 31,
32, ..., 38. The 3rd line joins all the 3- and breaks whenever a 1- or 2- occurs.
The 4th line joins all the 4- and breaks whenever a 1- or 2- or 3- occurs. And so on.
(iii) Those marked 1- are siblings. Those marked 2- are siblings or first cousins to each other. Those marked 3- are second cousins to each other or closer.

DETAILS
0 0-Randall JUXSON/JUDSON bur 16.2.1670 St Thomas, Portsmouth.
Victualling Officer. Presumably also a brewer. In the Portsmouth Burial Records, he
is listed as a "Victualling Officer". A victualler was one licensed to sell ales wines and
spirits, exactly what Randall's position was is not clear - did he supervise
the inn-keepers or was he himself licensed to sell, perhaps to the Royal Naval
Dockyard? A highly competitive job one would imagine. He was presumably also a
brewer, as was his son Randall or Randolph [1] (the name varies in the various
records as often happened at that time - those who could read and write very
often having to guess at spelling what was related orally.)
m sp-Anne of Portsmouth bur 10.12.1673 St Thomas, Portsmouth. Will 7.12.1673 - she made her mark. Held by the Hampshire Record Office
(Accession Number 1673 B 24 / 1,2, and 3), dated 7.12.1673, it is difficult to
decipher and, although signed with her mark, was virtually a non-cupative
written in the third person, perhaps by the Revd. THOMAS HEATHER.
It transcribes as follows: -
December the 7th 1673 by ANNE JUDSON of the Towne of Portsmouth, widdow, being
very sicke and weak in Body but of sound mind and memory declared this to be
her Last Will and Testament touching her worldly goods, her debts being first
paid:-
The remainder of her goods after the payment of her funeral expenses should be
disposed of and sold for the advantage of her son RANDALL JUDSON [1] which she
made the executor of this her will, but she made THOMAS HEATHER: Vicar of
Portsmouth and Mr WILLIAM COLLINS of the sayd Portsmouth, Shopkeeper, to take
the trust upon them of selling the goods she left behind her and having payed
her debts and funeral expenses should deliver the remainder belonging to her
son, together with her son, to his nearest relatives that would receive him,
and, to this end she gave full power to the sayd THOMAS HEATHER and Mr WILLIAM
COLLINS (by reason of the minority of her son) to sell and dispose of her
goods as is above expressed.
This was declared to be her will in the presence of
ANNE SMITH and REBEKAH WILKINSON [Signed with their marks]
Anne JUDSON made a very wobbly mark on the document
An Inventory was made of the contents of Anne's house. It was the custom at
that time for the local courts of law to appoint two responsible and impartial
men to inspect and value the property of recently dead persons. These people
were called Appraisers.
This is a transcription of the Inventory made of Anne's property on 12.12.1673.
It is not difficult to imagine the appraisers going from room to room listing
Anne's worldly goods. From the list it is possible to deduce that she was not
too badly off for the time.

1 1-Randal/Randall/Randolph JUDSON a minor in 1673 when only offspring in his
mother's will (so b after 1652). d 1709-1712. Randolph's name appears several times over the years, in the Quarter Sessions Records of Portsmouth: -
13 April 1703 RANDALL JUDSON summoned by the Constables of Kingston and
Buckland to act as juror on 18 April, being a freeholder of the community
9 - 23 May 1704 RANDUFF JUDSON was held in recognisance for P10 Licence.
(his fee for his business licence - he was not 'held' physically!)
25 September 1705 again summoned for Jury Service and stood bail for ...
CRESSWELL
27 May 1706 He stood bail (P 40) for a widow ELIZABETH NORRIS and SYMON YOUNG who were in dispute (a large sum of money)
7 September 1708 he was described as a brewer and stood bail for P50 for
MARTHA MOOREY accused of assaulting the wife of ALEXANDER MACDONNELL.
14 October 1708 RANDOLPH JUDSON was a member of the Frankepledge, this system of keeping law and order involved one person being responsible for a group of
inhabititants usually a street or group of workers -rather like school prefects
18 October 1708 Pledged P25 bail for JOHN BILLUE accused of assaulting
JAMES BOLTON of HAVANT.
27 April 1709 He stated on oath as witness at a trial that whilst in
conversation with JOSEPH WISEMAN the latter admitted to being one of the
individuals who on the night of 25 April unlawfully removed the inn sign
THE ADMIRAL'S BARGE belonging to BENJAMIN ETHERINGTON.
5 May 1709 RANDOLPH JUDSON was summoned to serve on the Grand Jury to be held at the Guildhall at 10am on Thursday 12 May 1709.
It is thought that Randolph died outside the county of Hampshire as he does
not appear on the very comprehensive Burial Index.

There is a P.C.C. Will which I have transcribed, I think it must be the father
of Talbot although it makes no mention anywhere of other children:
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN
This 18th day of September Anno Domini 1708 and in the seventh year of the
Reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain - I, RANDOLPH JUDSON of Portsmouth in the
County of Southampton: Brewer being at present in health of body, sound mind
and disposing memory, but calling to mind the frailty and uncertainty of the
life do make and declare these presents to contain my last Will and Testament
in manner and form following:
That is to say Imprimus and Principally
I give and resign my Soul to into the hands of Almighty God, my Creator hoping
for the pardon of my sins by the alone merits and mediation of Jesus Christ my
Blessed Saviour. My Body I give to the Earth and my Worldly Estate in manner
and form following:-
That is to say I give devise and bequeath unto my loving wife ELIZABETH and
to her heirs, administrators and assigns all and singular my Messuages,
Tenements, Lands, hereditaments and all other my Goods and Chattels and
Personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever (after the payment of my debts and
funeral charges and expenses.)
And I do hereby nominate and appoint my said wife ELIZABETH to be the whole
and sole executor of this my Last Will and Testament. In witness whereof
revoking and making void all other Wills by me at any time heretofore made or
declared both by word or writing.
I have hereunto set my hand and seal this day and year above written
RANDOLPH JUDSON
Witnessed by P. FRANKLIN; JOHN FRANKLIN; and ?? Rachel EDMUNDSON

original to check on the third witness.)

11 2-Talbot/Tolbut/Tabbot Edward/Edwards JUXTON bp 20.6.1711 St Thomas,
Portsmouth? Tabbot Edwards son of Randall and Elizabeth JUXTON. bur 28.3.1773.
29.4.1736 on jury for the Court Leet with Richard DEACON. 1736 baker. 1749 juryman. Bur 28.3.1773 St Thomas, Portsmouth aged 62. A prosperous baker with military & naval contracts? BT: He seems to have been or become a man of some
substance, and a land-owner. The fact that his will was proved in the P.C.C.
means either that he had property in more than one archdeaconry and probably
therefore in more than one county, and as his burial cannot be found in
Hampshire he may possibly have died abroad (in which case his will would have
certainly been proved in the P.C.C.) or in another county.
TALBOT also appears in the Quarter Sessions records but not always on the
right side of the law!
29.4.1736 TALBOT EDWARDS JUDSON and RICHARD DEACON were members of the jury for the Court Leet.
(This entry is quoted in full):- On November 14th 1738 JOHN COLLINS a drummer
belonging to Brig. Gen FIELDING's Regiment of Invalids (these were regiments
raised to augment the Army Strength, they were recruited from old soldiers, who
were posted to forts and garrisons to release the regular soldiers for more
dangerous duties abroad, they were not intended to do more, but as time went by
they too were often used in front line fighting.) on November 9th last, whilst
COLLINS was on duty at the main gate beating the morning - drum, made oath
that TALBOT EDWARDS JUDSON - baker - threw a brick bat which struck him on
the left leg. The report of proceedings has not yet been tracked down
(Portsmouth Records Office S3/109/20) so it is not known whether Talbot was
found guilty. Did he perhaps have a hangover and COLLINS' drum was causing him
agony? Had COLLINS insulted his baking - was the 'brick-bat' a stale loaf?
30 April 1749 A list of Borough Officers gives TALBOT EDWARDS JUDSON as a
juryman and JAMES DEACON as an Alderman (S3 ? 129/161) Beside James
DEACON's name appears the word 'Dead'. This must be 'our' James [ID 0 at
deacon.html] who died in 1748. Talbot died in 1773 and was buried on 28 March. He is referred to as 'Mr' which implies a certain status in the community.
I am intrigued by the first names of the men, Randolph/Randall and Randolf
would be unusual Christian names for the time, unless they were mothers' maiden
names in the Scottish manner, and Randell is a Scottish name. EDWARDS is also
a surname, being almost always spelt without the S as a Christian name.
The surname JUDSON has been identified by some authorities as originating in
Yorkshire and derived from 'son of George' but as it seems to be so rare it
does not figure in most reference books.
This account has been hugely helped by Dr. Phil STOKES who very kindly looked
things up and by Norman HURST who, as ever, cheerfully gave of his time to
explain Military and Naval matters. - Received ex BT 7.10.2005.

The 3 largest breweries (as indicated by their rateable values) were all in
Penny St in the old town. The largest, trading as Wm PIKE & Co was founded by
Wm PIKE behind 19 High St in 1719. He had been apprenticed as a cooper to his
mother's cousin Wm MUDGE in 1705 when he was 14 & he must have also learned the
trade of brewing in the brewery establidged by MUDGE at the `upper end' of
Penny St before 1695. MUDGE died in 1706. ...
MUDGE's brewery . passed to the widow of Thomas PERKINS who married

Southampton & Chichesster; of Messrs. ROSE & Henry DEACON at the Brewery, who will show the Property."
p23 Table 2 shows DEACON owning 35 Licensed Houses in 1830 (following CARTER
(PIKE) with 74 & SPICER with 40) with GER (Gross estimated rental) of Brewery
90P. Source: PCRO Rate Returns 1830; various title deeds.
p25: ... the 60 barrel copper at DEACON's brewery was said to be capable of
producing 10 to 12,000 barrels per annum: [REF 248] that is brewing 4 times a
week throughout the year.
The Beerhouse Act achieved one of its aims immediately, that of eroding the
tied house system. Of the new beerhouses only the ones directly attached to
breweries were tied initially. The established breweres, PIKE, GARRETT, DEACON
& SPICER, all had spirit businesses as well as their brewing & they seem to
have been content owning 80% of the public houses in the borough. When DEACONs
ceased trading there was so little interest in their 27 public houses that a
2nd auction had to be held. [REF 249]
Only 7 of DEACON's houses were bought by brewers in Portsmouth, although 2
Gosport brewers bought 2 each, 6 of the licences lapsed & 10 passed to
non-brewers [250], an indication that regardless of the fact that new spirit
licences were not being granted by the mangistrates, the brewers were not
unduly concerned about increasing their outlets. ....
Conclusion. Undoubtedly the presence of the Royal Dockyard in
Portsmouth has been the driving force behind the development of the
local brewing industry, & the town has always prospered from defence &
war because of that presence. The King's brewhouses & subsequently the
naval contracts developed a disproportionatly large brewing industry
in the town which was augmented by, & later sustained by the regular
influx of seamen & soldiers, & the ever-growing population needed to
service the Dockyard & garrison. The recurrence of the brewers' names
in the list of Mayors, Aldermen & even MPs attest to their wealth &
influence, points which are reinforced by the existence of brewing
dynasties founded in the 17th & subsequent centuries. ...

'After domestic consumers, the water companies' most valuable customers were
the brewers. At least nine of them - [including] William DEACON - invested in
Portsea Island [Water] Company. Most of them also took that company's water,
although they all had their own supplies.'
A summary of his will 13.6.1791, codicil 15.6.1791, proved 1.10.1792, using ID numbers at deacon.html where his ID is (10):
(10) William DEACON (1733-1792) a very wealthy merchant & brewer with property
in Portsmouth, Portsea, Westbourne Sussex & Southampton, & in Brading on the
Isle of Wight, left very specific directions about disposal of is worldly goods,
providing handsomely for his wife & 7 surviving children: (10)1 James b 1762,
(10)4 Elizabeth Ann 1765-1836, (10)5 Wm b 1767, (10)9 Jane b 1769,
(10)9 Ann b 1774, (10)(11) Henry b1777 & (10)(12) Mary b 1780 clearly stating
what investments were to be made & what property sold so that each should have
a large annuity. He made his 2 elder sons his executors. At the date of his
will only his dr Elizabeth (10)4 was married - to George TRIPP RN.
He also wished that his sons would ".. maintain & keep for my said wife's sole
use, as good a pair of horses for drawing her carriage as they know I would
have driven myself, & knowing how fond I was of driving, & that my wife should
have the use of the stables, coach house & lodging over the coach house,
lately built by me near my Brewhouse, for the purpose of keeping her horses,
harness, & her carriage. Her coachman to have his quarters in the lodging.
The will was written, signed & sealed on 13.6.1791, witnessed by Edward LINZEE,
John ..., & George BINSTEAD. There followed a codicil:
NB It is my will & desire that the following particulars take place after my
decease, notwithstanding they were omitted from the main body of my will -
I give my dear wife Elizabeth my pew in Portsmouth Church (St Thomas') being in
the front of those North Galleries towards the west end of the church, for the
use of herself & our children for & during the term of her natural life & after
her decease I give the same unto my dear & eldest son James DEACON. The said
pew has been in the occupation of my family about 60 years.
William DEACON 15.6.1791.
The will was proved on 1.10.1792 in the PCC the relict Elizabeth, the 2 sons
James & William. - I think it was a fight between these 2 that consumed the estate.

His will 3.3.1823 proved 14.4.1824 His will ex Clare EAGLE 2006 to BT:
I Thomas VIVION Purser in His Majesty's Royal Navy being of sound mind and
memory do make this my last will and testament that is to say
I give and bequeath to my dear wife Rebecca VIVION all the money and pay due
to me and all property of whatsoever nature or kind I may die possessed of for
her sole use and benefit and I do also appoint her the said Rebecca VIVION and
my eldest son Lieutenant Colonel John VIVION of the Royal Regiment of Artillery
to be joint Executrix of this my said last will and Testament. Signed at
Brompton in the County of Kent 3.3.1823.
Witness Wm DENNIS - - - Wm BALE Adj't Marines, Thos VIVION.
Proved at London 14.4.1824 before the worshipful John HAGGARD Doctor of Laws
and Surrogate by the Oath of John VIVION Esq'e the son of the Executors to
whom Administration was granted being first sworn duly to Administer Power
reserved to Rebecca VIVION Widow the Relict the other Executor.
BT per a British Naval Researcher: "Thomas VIVION was a purser in the Royal
Navy. A purser was a warrant officer, and thus not a commissioned officer at
this time. This made his records harder to find. Apparently the purser was the
man who suppled the ship, keeping the profits he made. He usually needed
financial backing, and thus I suspect that his connection to the JUDSON family,
victuallers in Portsmouth, facilitated both money he needed to start, and the
supplies he was required to find.
In appointment lists for officers in the Navy under ADM?1117011, he was
stated to have died on 7 January 1824. Under ADM/11169/1 we find him appointed
to the newly built ship HMS BRITANNIA on 21 April 1812 as Purser. In
ADM/ll/63/3 we find two subsequent ships he was assigned to as Purser. On 8
December 1812 he joined the VILLE DE PARIS, and on 17 August 1815 he joined the
SPENCER. However there was no information on earlier or later appointments, so
perhaps he was not a purser prior to 1812, but working his way up. The Navy
lists him trom 1814, where he was listed as the second most senior Purser in
terms of when he entered the Navy, which was 1768. From 1816 until his death
in 1824 he was the most senior in the Navy. In 1768 he may have entered the
Navy as a Purser, or as a Junior Purser, but the records do not seem to exist
to show this prior to 1812. Since there were earlier lists, and Pursers were
mentioned (I checked ADM 11165 which covers 1780-1784, and ADM 11168, which
covers 1803-18110 then I assume he did not become a full Purser before 1812.”

He gives his entire money invested, owed or otherwise into the care of three

money in Government or Real Securities in such a way as to produce interest
which will pay for five legacies in the fonn of annuities to his parents:

Codicil I 16 June 1825: After he had written his will JOHN VIVION bought an
annuity of £164/14/O for the life of his wife Elizabeth he wishes the amount
invested to be realised after his death and given as a lump sum to his wife
for her sole use and benefit This was witnessed by WILLIAM LEWIS, HANNAH STEAD of 59 Grand Parade, Brighton and ELIZABETH STANFORD Servant to Col. VIVION.
Codicil II 5 July 1826: He had that day completed the purchase of a house in
Brighton at No. 19 Regency Square from Mrs MARIA WALKER it was necessary to
add this codicil because he wished the value of the house to be counted in
with his personal fortune which was to be divided among the legatees.
Codicil III 10 February 1829: he had that day arranged to buy the house at
No. 18 Regency Square and wished it too to be included in his estate. He must
perhaps have been already feeling ill because he is anxious that his trustees
complete the settlement and sale should he die before being able to do so.
He wanted to be certain that it was included in the estate for his wife's
benefit. In fact he lived until 1832.
His Will was proved in London with three codicils on 5 December 1832 before
the Worshipful JOHN DAUBENY Doctor of Laws, by the oaths of Sir John LOWELL:
Knight and Stephen GALWAY esq., having been sworn first duly to administer
the same. Elizabeth Henrietta renounced, which just means that she left it to
the other two trustees to complete the fonnaIities,.this was often done to
spare the widow a "public" appearance.

The following is a love letter transcribed by Joan NOURANI and her sister:
I am involving myself in such inextricable _ from the _ of mental
indulgence I have of late yielded to that it becomes necessary I should _ my
pursuits not only to prove weather they be good or no, but, what is of far
greater importance whether or not it be expedient that they should be
persevered in and this must be determined not so much by my own wishes or
desires, as by the interest you take in them & as it may affect your future
happiness or prosperity in life. I think I need not explain to you why my
visits have been so frequent to you, nor is it necessary for me to say that I
wish always to be with you, & that, in your absence, I sigh for something that
I fain would believe comes along with it a panacea whose healing powers are
such, as shall with the tiniest touch soften and assuage & cieatrize the
wounds of my long suffering heart by the affliction which it has pleased
Heaven to visit me - Oh! this is a subject fit only for the calm mind of
philosophy. I must not touch upon it here even this little too much when I am
seeking to establish such an interest with you, whose wishes & whose
excellencies are such that those ought to be in admitted rivalry even though
at rest in the peaceful quiet grave - but I am wildly inconsistent - led from
the point, or rather ingeniously severing myself from it, from a view of the
difficulties I feel towards introducing it with that delicacy & feeling as
such a subject deserves - but to be silent longer would be to hazard a
suspicion that my mind revolts at; & this must not be _ how shocking to be
looked upon as an idle unmeaning dangler, forbid it be know would god my dear
Miss VIVION, I would flatter, myself, that in a survey of myself as to
situation, circumstances & years I could see nothing but what would justify
this address - all then would be calm within & I should unhesitatingly,
declare my election: as it is I can only thus insinuate where and how much my
partiality is established to what serious exclusions it points - leaving you
to decide whether or not it ought to be encouraged - I have thought that the
Simple establishment of a field officer of the marines at one time was all I
should require and thought the times are not improved since then - I shall
think when hearts engaged, it might do: what says my humble friend? Could she
conform to such a ridged system which such circumscribed means would
prescribe? & could she undertake the trial with one having no other
pretensions to offer-than a sincere and affectionate Heart that Heaven too.
Having induced the severest conflicts of pain and pleasure & which comes not
therefore the sort of offering which thy innocence, thy youth, & other strong
pretensions so greatly claim - All that I have to offer however is thine - I
fear not worthy thy acceptance but, whether or not, I am sure you will be
ingenious - if you bid me hope I will endeavor to deserve such mighty - boon
- but if a denial awaits me I will submissive - take it as the award of
Providence and add it to the score of ills with which my days have been
visited - though I see it not doubtless for my good and I shall yet continue
with the greatest partiality on my dear Miss V

but frame thin tin - we'll see. Is not Aunt Alice [1154 (10)]'s daughter a t-.
I have worked harder to include it is with his good a photographer as his
others have to hand to the photographer chipped through the glass. It is back

The earliest mention of this name that I have been able to find was in 1349 and

Henry JUDDESON was listed in a Cheshire deed of 1370.
