Planting trees could reduce flooding levels in Cumbriapublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March 2016
08:59 GMT 11 March 2016
New research gives weight to the view that trees could help to reduce flooding in Cumbrian towns.
A study for the Environment Agency suggests that planting trees can slow down the rush of rainwater and save properties from flooding. But it also warns that natural flood prevention methods don't always work.
The study from the Universities of Birmingham & Southampton says that trees help byslowing down raindrops so they're more likely to soak into the soil.
They alsoaerate thesoil which helps it to soak up more water. And the trees themselves store water.
Itconcluded that strategic tree planting couldreduce the height of flood watersby a fifth.
